Horticulture Teacher

 

Position Description:                         

 

To provide leadership and coordination for all students enrolled in secondary school horticulture education courses.  To focus on excellence in classroom/laboratory/greenhouse instruction, supervised agricultural education experience and FFA student organization activities.

 

Position Purpose:                               

 

To provide students with the opportunity to explore hundreds of career options available in horticulture and to assist them in planning for a future career; to train students with the technical skills needed to be successful in an agricultural/horticulture career; to connect school with the real world of work through work based  learning experiences through supervised agricultural experience programs; to offer students the leadership and personal development training needed to succeed in a career including, but not limited to teamwork, problem-solving, analysis and communications; to enable students to compete in the global economy by increasing international understanding; to empower communities through developmental projects that involve students, parents, business leaders, civic organizations, school leaders and others.

 

 

Position Responsibilities:            

  1. Maintain the greenhouse and produce a successful plant sale in the spring
  2. Maintain an active FFA Chapter and Alumni.
  3. Coordinate and supervise the development and growth of an SAE by every agriculture/horticulture student.
  4. Provide an instructional program that meets the needs of students and horticulture industry.
  5. Coordinate a strong FFA chapter that correlates with the instructional program and in which all agriculture/horticulture students are members and participate.
  6. Develop strong, positive relationships with key agricultural education partners including, but not limited to the, guidance counselor(s), principal, superintendent, CTE director, county cooperative extension service leaders, agribusiness leaders, parents and other teachers.
  7. Develop a year-round calendar of activities that is approved by local school administrators.  The calendar should include: SAE visits, FFA activities, professional development opportunities, agribusiness visits, etc.
  1. Provide career guidance for students interested in career opportunities in agriculture/horticulture.
  2. Develop strong marketing, recruitment, retention and public relations effort for encouraging all students to consider enrolling in agriculture/horticulture education and joining FFA.
  3. Ensure that all federal and state safety standards are met in the horticulture (greenhouse) and education facility.

 

Salary/Benefits:  According to the State Salary Schedule.

 

Qualifications:

 
NC License Area: (700) Agriculture Education
Bachelor Degree from an accredited university.
Masters' Degree preferred.
